A study shows that motorcyclists with anti-lock brakes have a better chance of avoiding accidents. A lot better chance.

Results of a study released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicate that motorcycles with ABS are 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal crash. Wow. That's a pretty big percentage- especially when you're talking dead versus not-dead.

The data is taken from motorcycle accidents that occurred from 2003 through 2008.

"The best motorcycle crash is one that never happens," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "Traveling on 2 wheels instead of 4 is always riskier, but our new research shows that antilock brake technology can make motorcycle riding a much safer way to get around."

As motorcycles become more and more technically advanced ABS has become more common. The technology that is required for engine management is on par with systems used by anti-lock technology. It's also become less stigmatized as an accessory just for weenies. After all, most of our cars have had anti-lock brakes for years.
