There's a saying: "Bad roads bring good people." I have gone out of my way to visit places just to ride a twisty bit of highway, often a road the general population would sooner avoid.

According to AAA these are the most dangerous roads in the nation. Now what you decide to do with this list is up to you.

Million Dollar Highway, Colorado

Officially known as U.S. Route 550, the route known as Colorado’s Million Dollar Highway winds through the San Juan Mountains. The scenery is breathtaking as the road climbs more than 11,000 feet above sea level. But the treacherous route has numerous switchbacks and curves, fun for a ride but not for the squeamish.

U.S. Route 1, Florida

A recent study found Florida has the most deadliest roads in the top 100. US-1 was ranked number 2. The reasons are varied, but straight and boring is a big one. Another one might be the state's lax laws on distracted driving. This is not one of the motorcycle destinations on this list.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, Louisiana

According to the Guinness World Record this is the longest bridge over water. The long, straight slog is at least a 30-minute drive with nothing to see but water. Or fog.

I-4, Florida

Tourists driving through Orlando. Need we say more?

I-45, Texas

There are some great roads in Texas. This isn't one of 'em. A recent study found the southern end of I-45 between Dallas and Galveston averages 56.5 fatal accidents for every 100 miles of roadway. Ouch.

I-10, Arizona

This transcontinental highway is  most dangerous on the roughly 300-mile stretch through Arizona. When crossing the desert we'll stick to the two-lanes.

I-15, Nevada and California

Here's another long, boring stretch of highway that is plagued with inattentive drivers driving too fast. Another one to avoid.

I-285, Georgia

This loop road circles the city of Atlanta in a 64-mile circle of doom. Back in 2015 a study found I-285 had a fatality rate at 3.5 per every 10 miles.

U.S. Route 17, South Carolina

South Carolina’s Highway 17 is one of the most scenic drives in the southeast. You'll find it's an enjoyable ride on the off-season. Summer brings tourists and inattentive drivers who frequently cross the centerline or stop without warning for a photo opp. Enjoy it- but be careful.

Dalton Highway, Alaska

Frequent visitors to this site are probably familiar with this 414-mile route from Fairbanks to Deadhorse, Alaska. It's a "bucket list" ride to the top of the world. But be prepared... if your bike can't manage 250 miles on one fill-up you'll need a jerry can!

Highway 2, Montana

This is more like it! Wide open spaces and sweeping vistas. Montana's highway 2 crosses the northern part of the state. Enjoy, but if you do drop it- prepare for a wait. A study found the average emergency response in Montana took almost 45 minutes.

Road to Hana, Hawaii

This 52-mile road connects Kahului to Hana along the eastern shoreline. The Hawaii Tourism Authority recommends tourists not drive this road and hire a permitted tour company instead. Hmm, doers that sound like a challenge?
