A Better What?

No... it's Beta. B-E-T-A.

Trials motorcycle are obscure here in the States. Some people may have heard of Montesa or Bultaco, but usually only from their childhood. Even the Gas Gas name, currently the popular choice in trials, is relatively unknown here. But a Beta is really obscure.

Betamotor SpA began as Societa Giuseppe Bianchi in Florence in 1904. It was in the Forties the motorcycles became known as Moto Beta. Beta builds its own engines and other basic components in a factory in Rignano, Italy. Beta won the world trials championships in 1987, '89, '90, '91, '97, '98 and '99 plus the indoor world championship in 2002 and European champion for 2003.

Today they make a variety of scooters, go-carts, small bore off-road bikes, a new enduro bike and the current trials machine: the Rev-3.

The most distinctive aspect of modern Betas is the innovative aluminum frame. Since the introduction of the Beta Zero in 1990 this has been a hallmark of Beta's trials motorcycles.

The current Rev 3 is also built on an alloy frame. Made in Italy by Verlicchi, this frame is a work of art in itself.

But there are many other features that set Beta trials motorcycles apart. The most noticeable is their build quality.

Here's Robt on his Aprilia Climber

My Beta Techno arrives from Oregon. The Aprilia Climber, in the background, was promptly packed inside the same crate to begin its journey to California.
