Story and photos by J. Rex Brown
OK-1 and AR-88 — October 1999
The Talimena Drive is by far the most popular attraction in these parts. But we discovered there's more to the Ouchita National Forest (say WAH-shuh-taw) and southeastern Oklahoma then that twisty road between Talihina, OK and Mena, AR. Here's a look at some out-of-the-way spots along the Drive.
Campgrounds and recreational areas abound in this part of the state. Accommodations range from primitive campsites to a "fit for a queen" lodge near Mena. You can find just about anything you want, depending on your budget and the level of amenities you require. We decided to spend a couple of nights at the state park on Lake Wister. This park, just outside of Wister, OK, offers about a dozen cabins in two locations on the lake. This made an excellent HQ for our journeys throughout Kiamichi Country.
The cabins at Wister are modest, most are duplexes built in the Fifties.
